4. Could a social tariff apply?

Universal Credit, Pension Credit and some other benefits may qualify. Eligibility varies by provider.

Know your rights

Four useful facts before you act.

End-of-contract notice

Your provider must warn you before your minimum term ends and tell you about its best available tariffs.

One Touch Switch

For a residential broadband or landline switch between networks, you normally contact the new provider and it manages the move.

Social tariffs

If you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit or certain other benefits, check Ofcom’s current provider list before ordinary deals.

Price-rise wording

For new contracts from 17 January 2025, any in-contract rise must be clear in pounds and pence; inflation-linked or percentage-based rises are prohibited.

Sources and methodology

How Square Peg reaches the result.

The checker uses only the answers you give it. It does not use commission to choose a verdict.

1. Timing

We look at whether the minimum term has ended, is close to ending or still has time to run. Early-exit costs can make waiting the sensible answer.

2. Fit

We consider the service you receive, any reliability problems, the speed you need and whether you would stay for the right price.

3. Price and support

Your monthly price helps identify a reason to review; it is not treated as proof of a saving. Possible social-tariff eligibility is checked before ordinary deals.

4. One next move

STICK when the position looks suitable; NEGOTIATE when the service fits but the deal deserves a conversation; COMPARE when timing and fit justify checking alternatives; or WAIT when acting now may add cost or effort.

What this result is: a source-informed recommendation based on the information supplied.

What it is not: a whole-of-market comparison, personal financial advice or a verified saving. A saving becomes verified only after a customer completes an action and confirms the outcome.

Method reviewed 16 September 2026 against the Ofcom sources above. Provider prices, terms, coverage and eligibility can change, so check the current provider terms before acting.

Quick answers

Questions people ask before renewing.

Does my provider have to tell me when the contract ends?

Yes. Ofcom requires an end-of-contract notification and information about the provider’s best available tariffs.

Can I switch without contacting my old provider?

Usually. One Touch Switch means the new provider normally manages a residential broadband or landline switch. Confirm any bundled TV, email or other services first.

Should I switch as soon as the contract ends?

No. If the service is good, negotiate once. Compare the full contract cost, speed and service only if the provider cannot offer a suitable deal.

If essential bills are becoming unaffordable

Do not take on new credit or cancel an essential connection just to improve a score. Speak to your provider about support and use free, independent debt guidance.
