How to cut your mobile phone bill

A mobile bill can keep feeling normal after the handset is paid off or when the data allowance is far larger than you use. Start with the contract facts, not a new phone advert.

Your best next move

Text INFO to 85075 to check your contract status and possible exit charge before deciding whether to negotiate or compare.

Do this in order

A simple check, not a financial application

  1. Check whether the handset is paid off and whether you are still in contract.
  2. Look at three recent months of data use; do not pay for an allowance you never approach.
  3. If you are keeping your phone, compare suitable SIM-only deals.
  4. To keep your number, text PAC to 65075. If you do not want to keep it, text STAC to 75075.
  5. Check social-tariff eligibility if you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit or another qualifying benefit.

Worth knowing

Don't trip over this

Leaving during a minimum term can trigger an early termination charge. PAC and STAC codes are valid for 30 days; check the provider's reply before proceeding.

Now check the household

One bill can be useful. The best three moves are better.

Square Peg ranks potential impact, urgency, effort and confidence—then tells you what to do first and what to leave alone.
