Pet insurance and pre-existing conditions: should you switch?

A cheaper premium can be a false saving if a new insurer excludes treatment your current policy covers. Before switching, compare the cover you would lose—not just the price you would pay.

Your best next move

Keep the current policy in place until a new insurer has confirmed in writing exactly what it will and will not cover.

Usually STICK, then REVIEW

The simple checklist

Do these in order

  1. Ask your current insurer which conditions are covered, the remaining treatment limit and how that limit resets.
  2. Get your pet's medical history from the vet so you know what a new insurer may treat as pre-existing.
  3. Ask any new insurer in writing whether each known condition, related symptom and future recurrence will be covered or excluded.
  4. Compare excesses, co-payments, annual or condition limits, dental cover and age-related changes—not only the monthly premium.
  5. Do not cancel the existing policy until the replacement is active and you understand every important exclusion.

Quick answers

People also ask

Can I switch pet insurance if my pet has a pre-existing condition?

You may be able to switch, but a new insurer may exclude the existing condition or related treatment. Get written confirmation of cover before ending the current policy.

Why might sticking with expensive pet insurance be the better choice?

If the current policy covers an ongoing condition that a replacement would exclude, the value of keeping that cover may outweigh a lower premium. Compare the likely lost cover as well as the saving.

What should I ask a new pet insurer before switching?

Name every previous condition or symptom and ask what is excluded, whether related conditions are excluded, what waiting periods apply, and what excess, co-payment and treatment limits you would face.
