Insurance renewal check: compare cover, not just price

Home and motor insurers must not set a renewal price above the equivalent new-business price through the same channel. That does not mean your renewal is automatically the best option in the wider market.

Your best next move

Put the renewal date in your calendar and compare like-for-like cover, excess and add-ons before accepting or switching.

Is this renewal worth comparing now?

Add what you know. We will tell you whether to compare now, prepare, or leave it alone for the moment.

Do this in order

A simple check, not a financial application

  1. Read the renewal notice and note the new premium, compulsory excess and optional extras.
  2. Check that your circumstances and cover needs are recorded accurately.
  3. Get comparable quotes with the same cover levels and realistic excess.
  4. Ask the existing insurer whether it can improve the price without weakening cover.
  5. Only cancel after replacement cover is confirmed and the start dates line up.

Worth knowing

Don't trip over this

Cheaper is not automatically better. A higher excess, missing legal cover, weaker limits or monthly finance costs can make a low headline premium poor value.
